EBOLI

Touristic Information

The territory has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the discovery of a Neolithic mummy in the Corno d’Oro area. With the arrival of the Romans, Eburum became an important and flourishing craft and commercial centre. It owes much of its contemporary fame thanks to the book by Carlo Levi, “Christ Stopped at Eboli”, but Eboli is also mentioned by Virgil in his Aeneid.

Gastronomy

Among the oldest traditional dishes of Ebolitan cuisine: ‘O Ciauliello, Pizzelle ‘e sciurilli, a Cubaita, almond and ricotta tart.

Beverages

There are several wineries operating in the area, including Cantine Iorio and the Rossella Cicalese farm.

Point of interest

The maritime coast road (in the hamlet of Campolongo) is characterized by a 4 km long natural pine forest. The Sele river is characterized by a nature reserve, a natural area called San Miele and an oasis along the path of the natural lake created. The hilly and mountainous area has parks and nature trails of great charm: from the Ermice and its path of the mills to the Monti Picentini Regional Park, passing through the San Donato Park and its homonymous path and the Montedoro consisting of the Tufara Gardens, the Roman aqueduct and the path of via Badia.

SALERNO

Overview

Salerno is a wonderful seaside city overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. It has almost three thousand years of history and is at the centre of a paradise of tourist attractions known all over the world: the divine Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri, the Cilento and Alburni, the archaeological sites of Paestum and Pompeii, the villages of green Irpinia, the vineyards of Sannio, and the splendour of the Royal Palace of Caserta. Salerno, famous for its Medical School and more recently for its magnificent Luci d’Artista works of luminous art en plein air, is the ideal destination for those who want to experience a high quality travel and stay among art and culture, flavours and shopping, nature and events.

Food

A visit to Salerno amid ancient monuments and sun-drenched beaches, cultural and entertainment events, enchanting panoramas and charming streets becomes even more tasty with the rainbow of local food and wine proposals inspired by a tantalizing fusion of land and sea. Restaurants, trattorias, kiosks offer an uninterrupted symphony of flavours all to be savoured. The ‘cuoppo’ is the favourite street food of visitors; a cartoccio full of breaded fried food: fish and vegetables galore. Don’t miss a taste of spaghetti “al dente” (cooked just right) with seafood, a sandwich with stuffed spleen typical of the patron saint’s day, a bunch of sanginella grapes from the Giovi hills, and aubergine parmigiana. There is never a shortage of freshly fried anchovies from the Gulf of Salerno, delicious buffalo mozzarella from the Piana del Sele, while the red of the San Marzano tomato brightens up first courses, summer salads or His Majesty the pizza. Sfogliatelle Santa Rosa, lemon delicacies, a typical strawberry cake, a slice of tasty annurca apple, calzoni with chestnuts, traditional nougat and sweets with Giffoni round hazelnuts, ice cream and lemon amalfitano “sfusato” slushies are the irresistible temptations for dessert. And to toast, there is no shortage of wines from the hills surrounding the city in an breathtaking embrace.

Points of Interest

The city’s millenary history is concentrated in the historic centre: the Arab-Norman cathedral dedicated to the patron saint Evangelist St. Matthew with its enchanting mosaics, the Minerva Garden where the ancient Salerno Medical School still cultivates medicinal plants, the Diocesan Museum and the Provincial Art Gallery, Piazza Flavio Gioia and Largo Abate Conforti with its monumental fountains. Shops and craft workshops in the old heart of the city offer the most typical products: ceramics, wrought iron, leather and glass work.  From the Villa Comunale, adjacent to the Verdi Theatre, you can look up to the Arechi Castle, which affords a spectacular view of the Gulf of Salerno. The Palazzo di Città, today the seat of the Giunta and the City Council, preserves the memory of Salerno as the capital of Italy (February-September 1944).The Archaeological Area of Fratte with its Etruscan finds is very suggestive.

The beaches along the coast are splendid for a dip and a tan in freedom. There are many parks to enjoy in the open air: Mercatello, Irno, Ghirelli where cultural events also take place. Salerno’s recent history can be admired in the masterpieces of contemporary architecture resulting from the urban revolution of Mayor Vincenzo De Luca, now President of Campania, and the commitment of the current administration led by Mayor Vincenzo Napoli: the Maritime Station by Zaha Hadid, Piazza della Libertà and Crescent by Ricardo Bofill, Marina d’Arechi by Santiago Calatrava, the Judicial Citadel by David Chipperfield.

Among the most important events: Luci d’Artista, an exhibition of luminous works of art in the streets and squares of the city between November and January, the Minerva Exhibition and the Fair of the Crucifix in spring, the Literature Festival, Sea Sun and the “Premio Charlot” under the stars in summer, opera and drama seasons in the city’s theatres, the Feast of St. Matthew in September, New Year’s Eve in the Square, Linea d’Ombra and the International Film Festival, and the Salernitana Serie A matches at the Arechi Stadium. The nightlife is lively, with many clubs offering live music.
