Giro-E Enel 2024, the future is now

05/04/2024

Milan, 5 April 2024 – Six times unique. The sixth edition of Giro-E Enel will start in Turin on May 4. Thanks to its unique e-bike experience formula on the same roads and days of the Giro d’Italia, the event has been the ambassador of sustainable and electric mobility, not only on two wheels, since 2019.

The route was presented by organizer RCS Sport & Events in Milan at MiCo in City Life today. There are twenty stages, like last year, totalling 1,150 kilometers in length, with an extraordinary elevation gain of nearly 20 thousand meters (19,850, to be precise). An incredible feat made possible by bicycles with an electric heart, which will be playing a key role in Giro-E Enel by enabling ‘ordinarily extraordinary’ cyclists to achieve outstanding performance.

From Piedmont to Lazio, from Turin to Rome, this will be an ideal journey between the two capitals of Italy, united by the longest (and most beautiful) road. This year many important cities will be touched, in addition to those mentioned: Bacoli, Benevento, Bolzano, L’Aquila, Lucca, Massa, Montichiari, Savona, Siena and Tolmezzo. And there will be stages for everyone, ranging from 30.5 kilometers of stage 1, Turin-Turin, to 81.5 km of stage 10, Benevento-Cusano Mutri, which will also be the one with the greatest elevation gain: 2,600 meters. A spectacular parade of curves, landscapes and climbs, a photograph of the Belpaese that only the Giro can give.

The 2024 edition of the Giro-E, the sixth in its history, is supported by Enel, a new Title Sponsor. The company, which has always been concerned about the environment and the sustainable development of the communities in which it operates, is proud to once again be part of an event that is an ambassador for green mobility, thanks to its pedal-assisted racing bikes that allow participants to ride on the same roads and on the same days as the Giro d’Italia. Enel will also be the Maglia Blu, the one worn by the Giro-E overall ranking leader.

Paolo Bellino, Managing Director at RCS Sport“Sixth year of Giro-E, a great satisfaction for an event that has grown a lot and is dedicated to a totally sustainable medium. We continue our journey to make the event increasingly green and continue the path started with NATIVA, which involves all RCS Sports & Events formats. The 2024 edition shines the spotlight on the excellence of the territory, the provincial towns, villages and, of course, the spectacular mountains: a showcase for the internal world on our country, as well as on the made in Italy”.

Paolo Bonifati, Head of the Lombardy Territorial Area of Enel Italia: “We are proud and excited to have renewed this important partnership again for this year. A collaboration sustained since its inception with the presence of Enel also in the Giro-E, a competition that represents the perfect integration between the spirit of sport and attention to the environment, confirming the Group’s interest in sustainable mobility and the protection of the territory”.

A new record was scored in terms of participation: 19 registered teams, plus 8 Daily Teams (the former Special teams), which in total will take the start in 31 stages. Many teams have been confirmed, and new ones have joined, such as the Teams of the Abruzzo Region, Rovagnati, and Virgin Active. One of the most prominent Daily Teams will be that of the Fiamme Gialle. The agency, which celebrates the 250th anniversary of its foundation in 2024, will also provide the organization with shuttle vans to take riders back to the start city at the end of the stage. Actor Paolo Kessisoglu, who has already took part in the Giro-E, will join in this year with the nonprofit organization he co-founded, C’è da fare, in the stages of Valdengo, Tirano and Valdobbiadene: any fans willing to pedal with him at the Giro-E Enel may do so thought a donation.

Two fan favourites will be joining as new captains Giro-E Enel’s large group of champions and former professionals, consisting of big names like Gianni Bugno, Igor Astarloa, Damiano Cunego and Andrea Tafi: Claudio “El Diablo” Chiappucci, the memorable winner of a Milano-Sanremo, two Giri del Piemonte and stages at the Tour and Giro d’Italia, who will wear the colors of Carglass, and skier Giorgio Rocca, three-time bronze medalist in the slalom World Cup, and specialty World Cup winner.

The green soul of the Giro-E Enel will also be promoted in all the starting cities, where the Green Fun Village Continental will stop, providing entertainment and content to increasingly engage the public and raise awareness of sustainable mobility issues and the need for environmentally conscious behavior.

BiciScuola, RCS Sport’s initiative aimed at young students will be an exhibitor there, with a double booth. BiciScuola is part of RideGreen, the project created in 2016 to reduce the effects of the passage of the Corsa Rosa on the territory, through the proper management of the waste generated and by using a traceability system. With the help of more than 200 volunteers and numerous local companies, also coordinated by the E.R.I.C.A. cooperative, the waste generated in the different locations along the route of the Giro d’Italia is collected in dedicated recycling depots situated at strategic points of each stage, and then sent for recycling to be transformed into secondary raw material and reintroduced into the production cycle. But over the years, RideGreen has become much more than waste sorting and recycling, and now involves education with BiciScuola and sustainable mobility with Giro-E.

The path undertaken by RCS Sports & Events in the field of sustainability continues through the RIntents project and the involvement of NATIVA – Regenerative Design Company, which supports Event Organizers in a radical evolution towards sustainability. After mapping the environmental, social and economic impacts of the Giro d’Italia (in which the innovative activities implemented in the Giro-E were considered), NATIVA will support the organization in improving the sustainability performance of its events this year as well, with a great involvement of suppliers, partners, sponsors and also the teams.

Quotes

Giorgio Cattaneo, PR & Communication Manager Continental Italia: “Continental has always had a close and strong relationship with two wheels: cycling is the perfect sport to bring out the Values that are central to us such as Safety and Sustainability. With this in mind, it becomes even more important to support a unique and inclusive event like Giro-E. This e-bike experience represents a valuable opportunity to stimulate people to keep their attention high on mobility issues that really affect everyone. We will be direct protagonists of the race by creating a team. Our captain Damiano Cunego will celebrate with us this year the 20th anniversary of his triumph at the 2004 Giro d’Italia. Then thanks to the Green Fun Village Continental, the public will have a special area dedicated to sharing, entertainment and information at the beginning of each stage”.

Roberto Salvador, Director of the Giro-E: “Giro-E is confirmed as an important event for both the territory and the world of sustainable mobility. This year ANCI provided us with crucial support in engaging local governments, and we have signed a three-year agreement with MOST for a study on battery performance, which will be carried out by mounting sensors on the bikes, while one of the e-bikes will be equipped with a fork made of environmentally sustainable material and 3D printed. But this year we have something new in store also for our fans: we have reserved 5 spots at each stage for riders who are not registered with any team. The spots, as such, are open to everyone, and the participants will ride with the RCS Sport & Events team and receive a Castelli uniform. Registration on Ticketone”.

Gianmarco Montanari, General Director of MOST – National Center for Sustainable Mobility: “The MOST National Center is the main national player in applied research in the field of sustainable mobility. Participating this year in Giro-E, which replicates several stages of one of the most important races on the national cycling calendar, is a confirmation of our focus on enhancing the Italian territory and will allow us to implement and field test innovative technological solutions developed at the Center in our first year of existence”.

Roberto Pella, Vice-President at ANCI“The collaboration between RCS Sport and the National Association of Italian Municipalities, sanctioned by the Memorandum of Understanding presented at the Chamber of Deputies last November, offers us a unique opportunity: the active and structural involvement of the municipalities of the Giro-E on issues of the development of the territories. The interest shown so far by the municipalities involved has been incredibly high, a first milestone that makes us very satisfied and is certainly the result of the growing awareness of mayors and local administrators of the key role that the themes of bicycle mobility and environmental sustainability can play in the socioeconomic growth of our communities. In the coming months, ANCI and RCS Sport will be able to strengthen this alliance, nurturing it with new activities and initiatives in favor of young people and territories, following the guidelines outlined by Minister Andrea Abodi, together with the Department for Youth Policies, whom I thank very much for their active collaboration”.

Alberto Tosti, General Manager of Sara Assicurazioni: “We are proud to be once again alongside this iconic event for our country and for sport. For us, it is also an opportunity to best express the DNA of the Sara brand, thanks to various activities that will allow us to talk about mobility, road safety, innovation and sustainability, without forgetting the presence on the territory and the involvement of Clients, Employees and Agents who will be able to live with the Giro-E in first person the experience of the Champions”.
